1 Nephi 4:6

"And I was led by the spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do."

Girls (and other contributors), I want to know what you think about being led by the spirit. How does the spirit speak to you and in what ways can we recognize the whisperings? I think that it's interesting that Nephi went into the wilderness with Faith, "not knowing" what he should do. How often do we want to know what we are supposed to do and do we forget that Heavenly Father won't tell us beforehand, he expects us to follow him in Faith.

Thoughts?

One of my favorite things about reading the Book of Mormon is that every time you read it (and we all know we've read first Nephi more times than we'd like to admit) you notice something new. This time I was very struck by the fact that Lehi admits that it is very possible that Laman and Lemuel could fall away, but he tells Nephi in Nephi 2:24 that if the do their seed will "stir them up in the ways of remembrance". Meaning, If Laman and Lemuel mess up, which we all know that they do, their posterity will always stir the Nephites up into remembrance and help strengthen their testimonies. What a wonderful promise.

There are three crucial things that Nephi exemplified that enabled him to be led by the Spirit. First, he was obedient to the Lord. In his own words he said: "I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded." He then followed through by acting on his desire to be obedient. Second, he exercised faith that the Lord "giveth no commandment unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them" (1 Ne. 3:7). Through his faith, he expected heavenly help knowing that the Lord would prepare a way. Third, he trusted that if he was obedient and exercised faith that the Lord would guide him to the solution. Nephi received that guidance through the Spirit.

These three things are key in feeling the Holy Spirit and being guided by him. I am personally grateful for Nephi's example!

3 ways Nephi teaches us to use the spirit... a recap from the Bishop's Comment.

1. Obedience
2. Used Faith to act on desire to be Obedient
3. Trusted that because of obedience and faith, the Lord would guide him to the solution.

This scripture is actually really helpful, especially this time in my life. I am trying to decide what college to go to, what I want to go into and do for the rest of my life, and other big decisions are continually going to find me these next few years. I just know that if I pray about it and ask for the guidance of the spirit, I will be able to make the right choices.

Alyx,

I am so proud of you for recognizing the spirit in your life. I think that when we show gratitude and acknowledgement of Heavenly Father's hand, our eyes are opened and we see him blessing us in all areas of our life.
